"“I don't write solos.”" |
GOD FORBID - THE NEW WAVE OF AMERICAN METAL HAS ARRIVED.
With three full-length releases and almost a decade of experience under their belts, God Forbid has unleashed the most cohesive and dynamic offering possible with their latest CD Gone Forever. Propelled by the blistering guitar duo of Doc and Dallas Coyle and the rock-solid rhythm section of Jon Outcalt (bass) and Corey Pierce (drums), each of the album’s 10 tracks rocks hard. This is all capped off with the guttural screams, sinister aggression, and thought-provoking lyrics of Byron Davis on vocals, who proves he is one of the most commanding frontmen in the genre today. God Forbid has spent the latter half of 2003 on tour alongside the likes of Atreyu, Darkest Hour and fellow hometown giants E-Town Concrete devastating audiences with their new material. However, it would be their slot on the massive MTV2 sponsored Headbanger’s Ball tour that would cap off an already stellar year. Recall how stunned you were after first hearing Metallica’s Kill Them All and Slayer’s Reign In Blood because this album is going to hit you just as hard. Check out the exclusive FPE interview below.
FPE: The dual leads on Antihero and Judge the Blood are awesome. Do you generally work out your solos in advance or just improvise them?
Doc: “I write all solos in advance and then jam over the main solo. I keep playing it over and over till know it by heart.”
Dallas: “I don't write solos.”
FPE: Do you double your leads with over-dubs?
Doc: “Definitely.”
Do you have a formal knowledge of scales and modes?
Doc: “I guess so, I never really formally trained but I use lots of minor scales which I learned by ear, I really don't think too much on the technical of scales.”
Dallas: “I don't have a formal knowledge at all.”
Did either of you study guitar formally?
Doc: “No, I took like a month work of lessons but that's it.”
Dallas: “Not at all.”

Who are your musical influences?
Doc: “I could go all day naming them but as far as early influences: Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Testament, later on influences: At The Gates, Meshuga, and more recently: Alice In Chains, Guns N Roses, more classic rock.”
Dallas: “Megadeth, Metallica, and Pantera to name a few major influences.”

Corey: “I’ve been playing for 13 years.”

Corey: “I have some drinks and do a bit of stretching.”
Bryon, when does the war against war begin?
Bryon: “As soon as the people who are subjected to the powers that be understand what is really going on and fight against it and revolt against the roles they give us and them telling us what they can and can't do, then the war will begin.”
God Forbid lyrics are intense and empowering. Is there a message that you feel the band is delivering?
Bryon: “We want people to wake up and see what's going on, not be judgmental and not just accept what you see what's go on around you, have a positive effect on others. It's mainly about consciousness.”
What was the last book you read and enjoyed?
Bryon: “Fight Club.”
Jon, what type of bass are you playing?
Jon: “I play a Fender Jazz bass.”
Do you play with fingers or a pick?
