Meet Drummer Dean Butterworth ""Pick up allot of old albums and listen and practice along with them. Be aware that in addition to performing live, there are other ways to make a living as a drummer."

MEET DRUMMER DEAN BUTTERWORTH

Drummer Dean Butterworth has been performing professionally behind the drum kit for sixteen years. He is currently on the road with the king of mope -Morrissey, playing to sold-out venues in the US and UK. Dean has also performed and recorded with Ben Harper, John Lee Hooker, and many other artists. FPE met up with Dean during a recent Morrissey rehearsal in Hollywood to discuss all things drum. Please read on!

For you what is the most exciting aspect to playing the drums?

"Playing in front of huge audiences and feeling the energy from then and my band members."

Who are your influences?

"Steve Gadd, Ringo Star, Stuart Copeland, Mitch Mitchell."

How do you warm up before a show?

"I warm up with rudiments."

Tell us about your gear.

"I use Tama star Classic drums, Paiste cymbals, Promark sticks and of course Evans drum heads."

From a drummer's perspective how would you compare the music of Morrissey and Ben Harper?

"Night and day. Harper is more soul based and Morrissey more rock."

When learning songs that you did not record do you play parts note for note?

"When playing Morrissey songs live that I didn't record on, I never play the recorded drummer's part note for note. I put my own spin on the song but I am always aware of the structure laid down by the recoded drummer. I use a combo of his parts and mine."

What advice would you give to kids who want to play drums for a living?

"Pick up allot of old albums and listen and practice along with them. Be aware that in addition to performing live, there are other ways to make a living as a drummer. I write songs for records, film and T.V. and also teach when I have the time."
