THE NAME IS BOND...KEVIN BOND. BY CHRIS LISEE
FPE's Chris Lisee recently tapped into the inner workings of Mr. Kevin Bond - guitarist for the mighty Superjoint Ritual. Check out this exclusive FPE interview below.
FPE: When, and why, did you start playing music? Did you take lessons? Who were some of your first influences?
KB: "I started playing music around the age of ten. my mother made me take piano lessons but I didn't like the piano(wish I would have). I wanted to play guitar. I got my first guitar at thirteen but didn't really take it seriously until sixteen. I never took guitar lessons. I just hung around older friends that had been playing for awhile and learned from watching and listening. I had many influences, Iommi, Van Halen, Rhoads, Page, Hendrix....just to name a few."
How did you get involved with Superjoint Ritual?
KB: "I have been in SJR pretty much from the beginning. I started out as the bass player (which I am not) then moved to guitar when Philip decided to sing."
How does the magic happen? Does everyone contribute to the songwriting, or does Phil do it all?
KB: "Philip had most of the material already written for the first and second records but everybody is able to contribute in one way or the other."
The band has a crossover metal/hardcore sound, but you are heavier than most hardcore bands, and definitely more hardcore than most metal bands. What bands, or styles of music, do you listen to?
KB: "I enjoy many styles of music except country and rap (rap+c=CRAP). I would have to say that Black Sabbath is my favorite band and most influential."
What bands (other than Superjoint Ritual) do you think people need to hear?
KB: "People should only listen to SJR (laughs). Listen to what you like!"
Both of the Superjoint albums have a very "live" feel. How were the albums recorded? Was the recording process different from "Use Once And Destroy" to "A Lethal Dose Of American Hatred"?
KB: "There weren't many studio tricks on the records. Both are pretty much live - one or two takes. I think once you start getting technical in the studio it takes everything away from the songs." Phil has a very powerful stage presence... What is it like being onstage with him, and seeing how the crowds react to the band?
KB: "I think everybody in SJR has a strong presence and I feed off of it onstage."
KB: "I think everybody in SJR has a strong presence and I feed off of it onstage."
KB: "What would I say to people offended by SJR... get over it!!!"
What is your main rig set-up? Do you use any effects? How do you get your tone/sound?
KB: "My main set up is 5150 II's, mesa engineering cabs and Jackson custom Rhoads. The only pedal I use is a Boss tuner."
What advice do you have for someone that listens to your band, and is just starting out on an instrument?
KB: "My advice for someone listening to SJR... turn it up as loud as it can go!!! My advice for someone that is starting to play... practice, practice, practice, and do not let anything or anybody stand in your way of getting what you want!"
