EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MIKE WENGREN OF DISTURBED
FPE Agent J recently had the pleasure of speaking with Disturbed drum wizard Mike Wengren. The band is currently writing and recording for their next release of skull-crushing metal. Read on for a sneak peek into the world of Disturbed!
FPE: Have you completed your recording sessions for the new CD (do you have a CD title)?
MW: "No, not yet. We're really taking our time to put out the best record we can. There is no title yet. We're shooting for a spring 2005 release."
FPE: What can Disturbed fans expect from your latest recordings? Did the band take any unexpected chances with this recording?
MW: "We've taken the best elements that everyone loved from the first two records and combined them. Then we expanded beyond that with more riffs and more double kick/ tom patterns. It's in your face......signature Disturbed on steroids. This is the best material we've ever written and we can't wait to unleash it on the world."
When recording your drum parts, do you play along to a click?
MW: "Yes, the click is an integral part of the recording process for me."
On the replacement of bassist Fuzz with John Moyer, have you had to adjust your playing style in any way?
MW: "No, we didn't have to change at all. John fit right in. The Disturbed rhythm section is noticeably stronger than ever before. John makes me sound better too."
Why did Fuzz leave the band?
MW: "Personal differences."
What drum gear are you using?
MW: "Pearl drums and hardware, Sabian cymbals, Evans drumheads, Vater drumsticks."
Why do you choose Evans drumheads?
MW: "I only use the best. I don't have time to fuck around with cheap imitations." Do you practice often to keep up your chops?
MW: "Just like the military continues to train during peacetime, I practice and train everyday to stay sharp and on top of my game, ready for battle at a moments notice."
What advice can you give to aspiring heavy-metal drummers?
MW: "Practice your ass off, but don't forget to have fun with it."
