Six Feet Under "We've always gravitated to the unusual, dark and weird side of religion, politics, etc"

SIX FEET UNDER'S TERRY BUTLER - BASS FROM BELOW!

Six Feet Under was a metal band reigning from the swamps of Florida before it was a TV show. Ok now we can move on. The band has just released "13" a collection of spooky, underneath the basement tunes that will rock you. FPE Agent F sat down with bassist Terry Butler to get to the bottom of the bottom end! Please read on.

FPE: What was the most challenging tune for you to record from "13"?

TB: "Well, we went into the studio with no ideas. We wrote everything 'on the fly'. So, the songs were all difficult. But I think the song 'Shadow of the Reaper' was the most challenging."

FPE: Do you play in standard tuning?

TB: "No. We tune 2 whole steps down for most songs and 4 steps down for a few others."

FPE: Do you play with your fingers or a pick?

TB: "Both. Some songs are looser than others. Kind of a 'Sabbathy' feel, so fingers sound better. The faster chunkier songs I think a pick is tighter and more precise. So the song determines how I play it."

FPE: What are you using for strings Terry?

TB: "I use D'Addario bass strings. ( 50-105 for my 4 string bass and 45-130 for my 5 string bass)."

FPE: Do you ever get scared playing with SFU? You guys conjure up some demons on your records!

TB: "(Laughing) We've always gravitated to the unusual, dark and weird side of religion, politics, etc. No, it's not scary at all."

FPE: Do you use distortion on your bass?

TB: "Yes, I run a distorted sound and a clean sound using my Ampeg SVTII heads and two 8x10 cabinets and combine them. It gives me punch and bite."

FPE: Tell us a bit about the history of the band. How long have you been together? How many CDs do you have out and how can viewers buy them?

TB: "2005 is our 10 year anniversary. The band was started by Allen West and Chris Barnes. Greg Gall and I came aboard shortly after. Steve Swanson was brought into the line-up in 1997, replacing Allen West. We have 13 releases to date. With a boxset due out later this year. Our cd's and dvd's can be purchased at any music outlet."
